Our typical day begins with a morning circle where we greet and connect with each other. This practice strengthens our community and gives each community member an opportunity to be seen and heard at the start of every day.
After morning circle, children have opportunities to develop their skills in reading and math. They may choose to participate in individualized instruction using online resources such as IXL, Lexia, and Khan Academy, or they may choose to read, listen to a read aloud, or play math games with peers. Guides assist children as needed to support them to develop understanding. After a break, children are able to use the remaining academic time in the morning to pursue independent study through reading and/or online resources.
After morning study, children enjoy a one-hour break for lunch and recess. Weather permitting, as much of this time as possible is spent outside in free play.
Our afternoons are set aside for the discovery and development of children's interests and passions through play and exploration. Children may choose to engage in art, drama, dance, music, games, study, etc. The possibilities are limited only by the imagination of each child and our ability to support them in pursuing their interests!
Finally, each day ends as it began - with a circle. In our afternoon circle we celebrate our successes ("glows") and discuss our challenges ("grows"). This is also a time where the entire community comes together to discuss and solve problems democratically. This provides children with opportunities to respectfully resolve differences and develop their autonomy and problem-solving skills.
